Coaching

What do you think of when you think executive coaching?

A sign of someone very senior?
An expensive endeavour?
A waste of time?

I am an advanced qualified executive coach. I've been coaching for over 5 years now.

I have chosen to ditch the term 'executive' and simply call this coaching.

Why? Because I believe in the power of coaching and I also believe everyone deserves the right to access it if they want to.

The key here is if they want to.

What is coaching?

Coaching is often confused with mentoring and counselling.

Mentoring focuses on sharing advice, wisdom and solutions based on relevant experience. You want a mentor who has walked in your shoes before, a good few years before you.

Coaching was born out of counselling so there are a lot of similarities. What separates them is:

  • content (I feel stressed at work vs I feel anxious all the time)

  • goal orientation (coaching always has a goal, counselling doesn't)

  • cadence (coaching is usually a set number of sessions, typically a month apart whilst counselling is more intensive)

How are they similar?

They are both client-led. The agenda is set and owned by the client. Critically, they both create the conditions and safe space for the client to self-reflect, explore and reach their own conclusions.

How is coaching different to consulting?

You're in the driving seat with coaching. I'm there to listen and create the conditions to help deepen reflection and enable you to reach conclusions and next steps, but they're very much yours to own and make.

How do I know whether I need consulting or coaching?

Ask yourself this: do you want to figure this out yourself and just need to carve out the dedicated time and headspace to articulate your thinking out loud, or are you looking for a sparring partner to brainstorm with and seek direct input from?

Put plainly, do you want to figure out the answer or do you want to be given an answer?

If the former, you're looking for coaching; if the latter, you're looking for consulting.

What if I want both?

No problem - we can do that! I find a lot of the time that's where we get to anyway. Consulting leads to coaching and vice versa.

What kind of topics can I explore in coaching?

  • A big promotion or career move

  • Increasing your performance and impact in your current role

  • A specific skill you're looking to develop

  • Managing stress and taking better care of yourself

  • Creating clarity and prioritising better

  • Having difficult conversations or managing difficult work relationships

  • Feeling stuck, uninspired or lacking in purpose

  • Redefining your identity and disentangling it from job titles and performance
